L’Oreal Bijou Crystals

Posted in Blue, glitter, L'Oreal, Red, Yellow on January 28, 2010 by ainamakeup

There are a few places in the city I check out regularly to see if there’s any cool cosmetic finds.  Every now and then I’ll come across some cheap goodies, like these lovelies I got at Lots for Less in lower Manhattan.  Take a look-see!

B. Rebellious

B. Rebellious is multi colored glitter in a smokey base.  I needed three coats to make this opaque.  I think it’s neat.  If there was no such thing as OPI My Private Jet I’d probably be really in love with this.

B. Outrageous

Sunny lemon yellow shimmer.  Not a color I’d normally go for but since it was like .99 cents I figured why not.  If nothing else, I’ll wear it on my toes.

B. Fearless

Another multi-colored glitter in a smokey medium blue sheer base.  Again, this took three coats to get opaque but I really like this.  I think this one is my favorite of the bunch.

B. Brave

The first coat on this looked very raspberry red to me, but by the third coat, it became this bright violet shade.  I didn’t think I’d like this one as much as I do.  It’s probably a color I wouldn’t normally wear but for a fun night out I’d totally wear this!

The one thing I did notice about these was they really smelled of chemicals.  The bottles all say Formaldehyde free but I’m thinking these polishes came out before everyone converted to Big Three Free.

Quick Hello

Posted in Uncategorized on January 27, 2010 by ainamakeup

Hey Y’all!

I haven’t been posting lately due to work overload and more recently a case of food poisoning that  I’ve yet to recover from.  I will say that I’ve been wearing Rescue Beauty Lounges No More War with the Poshe fast drying top coat and there’s been no chipping or anything!  I’ll be back in a day or so once I’m back to 100%.

My Latest Haul & the Conclusion of the CND saga

Posted in China Glaze, CND, glitter, Matte, Orly, Purple, Red on January 22, 2010 by ainamakeup

My last post was about how I mistakenly received a CND color and effect set in my mailbox.  Once I realized the name on the package was incorrect, I (reluctantly) placed the box back directly on top of the mailbox that had the first name of the person I thought it belonged to.  When I arrived home the next day and the box is now at my front door.  What’s a girl to do?   I’m keeping it!  I figure it’s the same as the “found money policy”.  You return it.  If someone doesn’t claim it within 24 hours, its yours to keep.  Add to that the fact that someone went out of their way to put the box in front of my apartment door.  I think I can safely say it’s mine to keep!

CND Rhubarb

Rhubarb is a tomato red creme that I unexpectedly like!  I’m not really a red girl- it feels too obvious for a nail polish color, but I think I’ll be wearing this shade every now and again.  Especially on my toes. That’s the one place I love to wear red polish.  I have to say the formula on this was really great.  It was perfect in two coats.

CND Rhubarb with Copper Shimmer

This is a nice effect, but I think I prefer Rhubarb on it’s own!

I also decided to treat myself to a few goodies from 8ty8  Beauty.  I just love that site!  I received my shipment unbelievably  fast! I got one of the colors from China Glazes Up and Away collection, and a bunch of cool Orly’s too!

Orly Iron Butterfly

I was going to skip this one.  I thought I didn’t need it, but I’m glad I changed my mind.  I find it hard to let matte colors be and not add a top coat, but I think this is really nice!  Of course I did indulge myself and added a coat of clear.  It looks even better with a top coat!

Orly Iron Butterfly w/ clearcoat

I was afraid this was going to look similar to the color Goth by Orly, but it is different.  The glitter is denser, and not really glitter.  More than that, removing the polish was much easier than removing the OPI suede polishes.  Taking off the OPIs is just as hard as removing glitter polish.

China Glaze Grape Pop

I wasn’t 100% sure I was going to like this, but I LOVE it!  This picture just doesn’t do it justice.  It’s way brighter in real life. Not grayed out at all.  It’s a fun color for spring but I’d wear it now in anticipation of lovely spring weather that coming soon, right, Mother Nature?

Orly Wild Wisteria

I have so many dark and vampy nail polishes and I don’t care!  I love them all.  This one is a deep violet purple creme.  Somehow it still reads “spring” to me.  Maybe it’s because of the name.

Orly Wandering Vine

I was surprised Orly went with another green creme for spring when they released such a great (and similar) green creme for last fall, “Enchanted Forrest”.  Then again, did that stop me from purchasing this one?  Not so much…..

I really happy with my haul!  Off to pick a NOTD for tomorrow.  Until next time addicts!!

Yay…Awwww

I was lamenting the other day that I don’t own any CND Colour Effects polishes.  It’s on my list of things to buy, but I’m on a budget so I must be practical.  I can’t get everything I want.  Especially after my haul at Rescue Beauty Lounge… oh and a few of the polishes from the BB Couture Vampy Varnish collection, but I digress..

I come home tonight, looked inside my mailbox and much to my surprise and delight I see a box from CND!  Could it be?  Have I so quickly graduated from unknown polish blogger to polish blogger who gets product samples from polish companies? Then I turned the box over to see who it was addressed to.  It wasn’t me.  The address was my exact address, but the name on the box wasn’t mine.  After surveying the mail boxes I noticed someone with the same first name, but a different last name.  I assume the package is for her.  I guess I have to give the box to its rightful owner.

What a letdown.  One day I will get my CND!

Makeup Monday: Lacquerholic’s Favorite

Posted in Makeup Monday, Sage Advice, Skincare on January 19, 2010 by ainamakeup

It’s Makeup Monday, y’all!  Today I’d like to share with you, not one of my favorite makeup products, but one of my favorite skin care lines.  I don’t know many people who have heard of Sage Advice Skin Care. I had first heard about them when I used to write product reviews for Cosmetic Connection.com.  It took a while to figure out how to order and what to order.  The first step in the process is buying a try me pack.  You have to fill out a questionnaire and then Barbara Strickland, the founder of Sage Advice skin care, will personally email you her recommendations.  Then you buy the try me pack that will most likely work for you.  If you get something that doesn’t work on your skin, you can change it for a different formulation.

It seems like a cumbersome process but once you jump through all those hoops and find the products that work for you, the real fun begins. My Favorite Products are:

SPF Sunblock 27 – $16.00

I can honestly say this is the best facial sunblock I’ve ever used.  I’ve gotten lax in my sunscreen usage in the cloudy mess that is my makeup table but realized that I need to wear sunscreen every single day.  Even when it rains.  What I love about it is that it doesn’t leave my skin ashy.   As a African-American woman, this is huge!  This same sunblock also comes in SPF 40!

Corrective Grains = $17.50 for 4 oz

This is actually step one in the skin care routine.  If you order from Sage they will give you complete instructions on how to use their products..including rubbing ice on your face!  Sounds crazy but it does feel good, especially if your skin is red and iritated…and on a hot summer day.

Facial Shampoo – $17.50 4 oz

I really love this facial shampoo, but I’d say if you can’t afford to get everything you want, you could skip this one.  I’ve found cheaper alternatives.  When I can splurge I get this and it just makes my face feel so soft and clean.  No need for a separate makeup remove here.  It takes eye makeup off like nothing else!

Fix Zit/Miracle Zit – $11.50 – 14.00 (depends on the formula) 2 oz

The Zit products are one of the things Sage is known for.  I’ve tried several variations of this but I really like the gentler Fix Zit more than Miracle Zit. I find my skin doesn’t like salicylic acid for getting rid of breakouts but my skin really loves sulfur, and I find the Fix Zit with sulfur really works well.  I have used this on a pimple at bedtime and have woken with the offending zit completely gone!

Gelloid Moisturizer & Mask – $25 2 oz

This is a fantastic, emollient moisturizer.  If you’re not moisturizing, I implore you to reconsider! I use Gelloid in all seasons but in the winter time, this is a life saver!  Like The facial shampoo, I can live without if when i can’t afford to replace it in this unstable economy but when I can I savor every smooth application.

Sage Advice is based in St. Louis so have to order it by web or phone but it’s a line worth trying- especially if you have problem skin!

In My Stash: L’Oreal Paris

Posted in L'Oreal, Purple, Red, White on January 18, 2010 by ainamakeup

I have to say that swatching these polishes reminded me of how much I love them.  I barely consider L’Oreal especially since I’ve started blogging because I’m trying to keep up with so many different polishes.  Some of these colors are incredibly cool and innovative.  And a few of them are not lost causes either.  You can still find these if you look hard.  One of them I picked up at a discount shop just a few weeks ago and it is a gem!  So without further delay here are just of few of my favorite polishes by L’Oreal Paris…

L'Oreal Paris Lights Out

Oh the hotness!  When this came out, I’d never seen anything like it.  It’s a smokey grayed out purple with shimmer and I loved it so much I bought a backup.  This color just makes me so happy!

L'Oreal Paris Citrine

Another gorgeous shade! A shimmery off-white that has iridescent flashes of pink!  You can barely tell from the pic but it is awesome.  It’s true love.  It’s similar to OPI Titan Your Toga but the pink flash makes this one extra special!

L'Oreal Paris Sheer Extreme

When I first saw pics of Clarins 230 I combed through my nail polish stash in hopes of finding something, anything that looked even remotely like it.  I know this isn’t even close, but I like this sheer redish brown with imperceptible flash of red shimmer.  I know this picture doesn’t do it justice but it’s still pretty to look at, no?

L'Oreal Paris Plumage

This is the one I picked up recently.  I love this a deep vampy purple with blue/green shimmer.  The name is perfect too.  Reminds me of the colors on beautiful peacock feathers!

L'Oreal Paris Jet-Set Fleeting

It just occured to me that this is the first red I’m posting.  Forgive the crappy paint job.  When I look at the bottle, it looks almost like it’s dusty. But this red is pretty vibrant.  It’s a medium red creme that I mostly use on my toes and I love the way it looks.  This is a pretty old bottle and it’s gotten a bit thick over time so that’s where the streakiness is coming from.  I added a little Seche restore to it and that made it a bit easier to apply.

These are all really fantastic polishes.  They make me remember not to walk too fast by that L’Oreal display at Duane Reade!

NOTD: OPI My Private Jet

Posted in Brown, glitter, NOTD, OPI, Purple on January 15, 2010 by ainamakeup

I bought this color a few months ago after hearing the incomparable Scrangie raving about it in an old post somewhere on her blog.  I left it in my stash unused until today and OMG.  I’m so in love with this color.  I can’t even describe what this is supposed to be. Sometimes it’s violety, other times it’s brown.  the multi colored micro glitter is a thing of beauty.  I kind of can’t stop looking at it.  I don’t even want to take a picture of it because I know I can’t do it justice.  I haven’t even seen it in daylight yet (it’s 10 PM here and my apartment does not get good light at all) and I can’t wait!

Here’s a pic with flash that shows off the multicolored micro glitter:

Here’s one more…swoon!
